No. 9 Comet girls top Saydel in OT

ALLEMAN – The North Polk girls’ basketball team remained in sole possession of second place in the Heart of Iowa Conference after pulling off a thrilling 71-66 overtime victory over Saydel Friday at Alleman.

The Comets – ranked No. 9 in Class 3A – trailed 46-42 going into the fourth quarter. They rallied to tie the score at 55-55 by the end of regulation to force overtime.

In the extra session, North Polk stepped up offensively with 16 points to outlast the Eagles and improve to 14-4 overall and 13-2 in the HOIC.

Free throws played a big part in the victory. North Polk went to the line a whopping 46 times and made 30 of those attempts.

The plethora of free throws helped North Polk overcome a 35-percent shooting night from the field, including a 5 of 17 showing from 3-point range.

Megan Murphy did most of the damage for North Polk at the line, finishing with a career-high 30 points. Murphy made 16 of 17 free throws and she also hit four 3-pointers and added five rebounds and one steal.

Megan’s twin sister Miranda posted 19 points, six rebounds, one block and one steal before fouling out. Macy Gill also scored in double figures with 10 points and she added six rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Riley Murphy chipped in six points; Maddy Hill had four points and five rebounds; Hannah Becker delivered one point, six rebounds and one block and Rachel Zimmermann tacked on one point and two rebounds for the Comets.
