NP comes up short in regional final

Comets fall to No. 3 Kuemper Catholic

PERRY – A dream run came up just a tad shy of state for the North Polk volleyball team Oct. 5.

The Comets took on No. 3 Kuemper Catholic in the Class 2A regional finals at Perry. Entering the match on a nine-match winning streak and having just swept No. 7 East Sac County North Polk was at its peak against the Knights.

But the Comets’ hot streak came to a close against Kuemper Catholic as they were swept by the Knights.

North Polk put up a great fight in the opening set, but came up on the short end of a 25-22 decision. The Comets then struggled in the second set, losing 25-13, and they only fared a little better in the third in setting for a 25-17 setback.

“The girls fought hard,” North Polk head coach Susan Nemmers said. “But it was hard for us to get our offense going. They blocked about everything we tried to run.”

North Polk only had a kill-efficiency rate of .019 with 26 kills and 24 errors in 105 attacks thanks to Kuemper Catholic’s impressive defense that produced 20 blocks. The Comets went 45 of 53 serving with seven aces and they had 49 digs and five blocks as a team.

With the setback North Polk finished 25-10. The Comets tied the school record for wins in a season set back in 1992.

“It was a great experience to reach a regional final,” Nemmers said. “Although we will miss our seniors greatly, a regional final match should prove to be a great confidence builder for our returning players. This team got better as the season went on and has a lot to be proud of.”

Megan Murphy had 11 kills, seven digs, two aces and one assist against the Knights in her final match for North Polk. Lilly Lomica totaled eight kills, seven digs and one ace, Jill Christensen recorded 13 digs, three kills, one block and one ace, Miranda Murphy picked up two kills and one block and Hannah Becker came through with a pair of kills.

Gracie Harmeyer handed out 23 assists and chipped in five digs, three blocks and one ace. Morgyn Bullock delivered 13 digs and one ace and Courtney Bonewitz chipped in two digs and an ace for the Comets.
