Raider boys earn Class B title at Ballard Classic

HUXLEY – The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys’ track team emerged victorious in seven individual events on its way to claiming the Class B team title and Ballard placed third in Class A at the Ballard Classic boys’ track meet April 17 in Huxley.

CMB continued to dominate in field and hurdle events and the Raiders also won two sprinting events. They scored 166 points to outdistance Madrid’s 139 points for the championship among seven teams competing in Class B.

In field events Zach Samson won both the shot put and discus. Teammate Patrick Girard came in second in the shot and Clayton Weltha placed fourth in the discus.

Samson won the shot put with the best throw of his career. The defending Class 2A state champion in the event, Samson had an outstanding throw of 58 feet, one inch to break his own school record.

Girard’s runner-up throw of 51-8 was 11 inches better than the third-place toss by Madrid’s Coy Kirkpatrick.

Samson’s best throw in the discus was 139 feet even. Kirkpatrick was a close second with a throw of 138-3 and Weltha peaked with a distance of 129-6.

Bryce Kemp won the long jump and Zach Huffaker came in fourth in the event for CMB.

Kemp’s best jump of 19-11.5 beat out Madrid’s Nick Novotny by three inches for the title. Huffaker peaked with a jump of 18-9.5.

Hunter Gunderson tied for second in the high jump after clearing 5-8. Jordan Coughenour also had a jump of 5-8, placing sixth for the Raiders.

On the track Kemp won the 110-meter high hurdles and Coughenour was the 400 low hurdles champion.

Kemp’s beat out BCLUW’s Will Garber for the victory in the 110 highs. Kemp ran a :15.20 and Garber finished in :15.45.

Coughenour completed the 400 lows in :55.85 to easily top Madrid’s Levi Hudnutt for the gold medal. Hudnutt’s time was :58.20.

Coughenour also won the open 400. He completed the race in :51.88 to just edge out the :51.97 run by Roland-Story’s Blake Morgan.

Kemp took second in the 100 with an :11.19 showing. Kemp and Huffaker were fourth and fifth in the 200 with respective times of :23.20 and :23.92.

Mark Deutsch placed second in both the 3,200 and 1,600 events for the Raiders. Austin Moorman also earned a silver medal in a distance event after placing second in the 800.

Deutsch’s time in the 3,200 of 10:54.80 was just a hair behind the winning time of 10:53.59 by Earlham’s Alan Schmidt. Colin Thomson came in third in the event for CMB with a 10:58.19 showing.

In the 1,600 Deutsch ran a 4:55.87. BCLUW’s Cole Silver won in 4:45.29.

Moorman completed the 800 in 2:11.77. Silver won in 2:10.66.

In relay events CMB won the 4 X 400 and placed second in the shuttle hurdle.

Gunderson, Huffaker and Coughenour were joined by Kyle Cather in running a 3:37.19 in the 4 X 400. Roland-Story came in second with a time of 3:38.41.

Moorman was joined by Nick Little, Joey Nissen and Brady Stover in running a time of 1:02.67 in the shuttle hurdle. Madrid won the event in 1:01.10.

CMB also took third in the distance medley as Little, Dalton Birchmier, Cather and Seth Balke ran a 3:55.75.

In Class A, Ballard scored 77 points to beat Gilbert by seven points for third out of eight teams. Dallas Center-Grimes won the Class A title with 104 points and Carlisle was second with a score of 90.

Mason Edwards had a big day for the Bombers as he won the 110 highs, took third in the high jump and anchored the Bomber shuttle hurdle team to a runner-up finish.

Edwards completed the 110 highs in :15.75 to just edge out the :15.77 run by Gilbert’s Wyatt Rhoads for the gold. In the shuttle hurdle, Edwards teamed with Patrick Gray, Sam Upah and Zach Upah to run a 1:03.66 and trail only the 1:02.74 run by Carlisle.

In the high jump Edwards peaked at 5-6. He was one of three jumpers to top out at 5-6, with the winning jump being 6-2 from DCG’s Reese Iverson.

Ballard added a silver medal in the shot put and 4 x 400 and a bronze in the 4 X 200, 3,200 and 100.

Kenny Randolph was runner-up in the shot with a throw of 41-9.5. Carlisle’s Luke Oja won with a throw of 44-11.

In the 4 X 400, the Bomber team of Kobe Schulze, Tyson Pritchard, Kaleb Odden and Isaiah Johnson clocked in at 3:35.48. Creston won in 3:34.91.

Johnson, Odden Cade Wilson and David Konfrst completed the 4 X 200 in 1:37.54. The Bomber team finished just behind Carlisle’s runner-up time of 1:36.97, and DCG easily won in 1:32.13.

Luke Kohut-Jackson took third in the 3,200 after nearly finishing the race in less than 10 minutes. Kohut-Jackson’s time of 10:02.93 only came in behind the 9:47.50 by North Polk’s Peter Smith and the 9:55.90 by Creston’s Brandon Phipps.

Pritchard also nabbed an individual bronze medal in the 100. He crossed the finish line in :11.19 to trail only the :11.10 by DCG’s Chaz Chambers and the :11.14 by Nevada’s Chase Dobson.
