Raider boys tame Tigers for 10th win

GILBERT – A big finish to each half allowed the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys’ basketball team to pick up a 69-55 Heart of Iowa Conference road win over Gilbert Friday at Gilbert.

The Raiders outscored the Tigers by seven points in the second quarter, and then finished the game on a 20-8 run to improve to 10-3 overall and 7-3 in the HOIC.

CMB overcame 10 Gilbert 3-pointers by dominating the boards and performing much better at the foul line than the Tigers.

CMB outrebounded Gilbert by a 49-31 margin. The Raiders also made 16 of 22 free throws, compared to a 3 of 11 showing from the charity stripe by the Tigers.

Bryce Kemp and Zach Samson posted double-doubles to lead a balanced CMB attack.

Kemp finished with 15 points, 11 rebounds, three steals and one assist. Samson owned the boards with 21 rebounds and he also recorded 11 points, two assists and one steal.

Seth Balke and Austin Moorman also scored in double figures for CMB. Balke had 14 points, six rebounds and four assists and Moorman finished with 12 points and two assists.

Dax Hatfield and Ryan Blum each scored 12 points for Gilbert, and Hatfield also dished out four assists. Wesley Greder tacked on nine points and seven rebounds for the Tigers.

BAXTER – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter avenged its first loss of the season with a thrilling 63-62 victory over Saydel Jan. 14 in Baxter.

CMB led 34-31 at the half, but Saydel rallied to take a 50-47 lead into the fourth quarter. Over the final eight minutes CMB did just enough to edge past the Eagles, outscoring them 16-12 in the fourth quarter to pull off an exciting home victory.

The Raiders shot 47 percent from the field and 68 percent from the line and made four 3-pointers. CMB also totaled 34 rebounds and five steals as a team.

Austin Moorman had 18 points, six rebounds and four assists and Bryce Kemp posted a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead CMB. Seth Balke added 15 points and Zach Samson just missed a double-double with nine points and nine rebounds.
