COLLINS – A brilliant pitching performance by Brady Stover enabled the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter baseball team to give a strong Roland-Story team all it could handle before succumbing to the Norsemen by a 3-0 score Monday in Collins.
Stover tossed a no-hitter against a Roland-Story team ranked No. 3 in Class 2A. But he was unable to overcome some control problems and defensive mistakes in the fifth inning as the Norsemen plated all three of their runs in the inning.
Stover gave up two earned runs with six strikeouts and seven walks, going the full seven innings against one of the best teams in the state.
CMB only had four hits offensively and the Raiders didn’t draw one walk as a team. Aric Broderick went 2-for-3, and Tucker Maxwell and Nate Bishop each singled once for CMB.
The loss put the Raiders at 3-8, both overall and in the Heart of Iowa Conference.
Roland-Story improved to 15-5 overall and 6-3 in the conference. Zach Hovick picked up the victory for the Norsemen as he struck out six and didn’t walk a single batter in seven innings.
Hovick, Cole Birchmier and Alex Urbanek each scored a run for Roland-Story. Urbanek walked twice and Hovick and Birchmier each picked up one free pass.

COLLINS – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter had a tough time getting the bats going against Colfax-Mingo Friday in Collins as the Raiders were handed a 6-1 loss by the Tigerhawks.
CMB only put up five hits against a struggling Colfax-Mingo squad. The only Raider run came in the bottom of the first inning.
Colfax-Mingo scored twice in the second and seventh frames and one run apiece in the third and sixth innings. The Tigerhawks ended up with 10 hits.
Hunter McWhirter went 2-for-4, Brady Stover singled, stole a base and scored, Tucker Maxwell singled and stole a base and Brady Kemp came up with one single for CMB. Spencer Gauch tallied one walk and steal apiece, Jacob Stratton and Nate Bishop both walked once and Brad Ritter had one steal for the Raiders.
McWhirter was the losing pitcher as he gave up three earned runs on four hits with five strikeouts and two walks in four innings. Seth Balke allowed three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and no walks in three innings.
Nate Smith went 4-for-4 with a double, steal, two runs and four RBI to lead Colfax-Mingo offensively. Colin Laurens was the winning Tigerhawk pitcher as he went the distance, struck out four and issued three walks.

GILBERT – It wasn’t Collins-Maxwell-Baxter’s night versus Gilbert June 12 at Gilbert as the Raiders were pounded for 17 hits in a 19-7 loss to the Tigers.
CMB gave up six runs in the first inning and trailed 8-0 through two frames.
Zach Samson belted a grand-slam home run in the third to briefly get the Raiders back in the game. But Gilbert exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the inning and CMB never stood a chance as the Tigers wrapped up the game after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
In addition to Samson’s grand slam, Seth Balke was 2-for-3 with a double, run and two RBI and Brady Stover went 2-for-3 with two runs. Hunter McWhirter also went 2-for-3 with one run, Spencer Gauch went 1-for-1 with a walk and two runs and Tucker Maxwell drew one walk.
Nate Bishop threw all four innings for CMB. He surrendered 11 earned runs with five walks and two strikeouts.
Jared Gescheidler carried the big bat for Gilbert as he blasted three home runs and drove in six runs. Wyatt Rhodes homered and knocked in two runs, Evan Johnson doubled twice and finished with four runs and three RBI and Wes Greder knocked in four runs for Gilbert.
Barrett Schonefeld gave up seven runs with five strikeouts and two walks in four innings to get the victory for Gilbert.

JEWELL – A big sixth inning allowed Collins-Maxwell-Baxter to pull away from South Hamilton for a 9-3 victory June 11 at Jewell.
The Raiders broke loose for five runs in the inning to turn a one-run game into a rout.
CMB finished with 11 hits. Seven different players picked up a hit and eight individuals knocked in a run in a balanced hitting attack for the Raiders.
Brady Stover went 3-for-5 with a triple, steal, two runs and an RBI to lead the Raider offense. Hunter McWhirter was 2-for-5 with one run and RBI apiece and Tucker Maxwell finished 2-for-3 with a walk, run and RBI.
Zach Samson homered and drove in two runs and Seth Balke added a double with two runs. Brady Kemp went 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI; Jacob Stratton finished 1-for-3 with a walk and an RBI; Brad Ritter walked, scored and drove in a run and Nate Bishop knocked in one run.
Stover was the winning pitcher. He went all seven innings and struck out a whopping 15 batters with just three walks. He only gave up five hits and didn’t allow an earned run.
Nathan Sogard took the loss for South Hamilton. He gave up seven runs on 10 hits with three strikeouts and two walks in 5 1/3 innings.
Hunter Griffin went 1-for-2 with three RBI to lead the Hawks on offense.

COLLINS – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter withstood inconsistency on offense to push Prairie City-Monroe to the limit before falling in eight innings, 8-3, June 9 in Collins.
CMB only finished with three hits, but the Raiders made them count.
CMB took a 1-0 lead after one inning and increased it to 3-0 with two runs in the fourth. PCM came back with a pair of runs in the fifth, and in the top of the seventh, the Mustangs added one more.
The Raiders were unable to come back with a run in their half of the seventh, forcing extra innings. In the eighth inning, PCM erupted for five runs and CMB had no answer, suffering a Heart of Iowa Conference loss.
Zach Samson went 1-for-3 with a walk and a run, Jacob Stratton singled and drove in a run and Hunter McWhirter added a single for CMB. Brady Stover walked twice and scored a run, Aric Broderick drew one walk and crossed the plate once and Tucker Maxwell picked up one free pass.
Seth Balke allowed seven runs – four earned – on 11 hits with eight strikeouts and no walks in seven innings to take the loss despite a quality outing. Hunter McWhirter gave up one run with one strikeout and walk apiece in one inning of work.
Clay Cooper went 3-for-5 with a double and three RBI to pace PCM on offense. Chase Keuning gave up three earned runs with five walks and three strikeouts in seven innings to earn the victory for the Mustangs.
