Raiders lose HOIC nail-biter to Greene County

COLLINS – The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter softball team pushed Heart of Iowa Conference leader Greene County to the limit before suffering a 2-1 loss to the Rams June 25 in Collins.

Greene County broke a 1-1 tie with a run in the sixth and CMB was unable to counter in its final two innings at the plate. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak that put the Raiders at 12-11 overall and 8-6 in the HOIC.

CMB pitcher Heather Jessen kept her team in the game despite giving up nine hits. She only allowed one earned run with three walks and two strikeouts, going the full seven innings.

The Raiders only tallied two hits off Greene County pitcher Marissa Promes. Payge Jurgens doubled and drove in Taylor Ross for CMB’s only run in the bottom of the fourth inning and Mackenzie Schmitz added a single and a steal for the Raiders.

Greene County improved to 12-2 in the HOIC and 19-5 overall. Marissa Promes was the winning Ram pitcher as she allowed one earned run with 10 strikeouts and no walks in seven innings.

Hannah Onken and Tressa Rasmussen both went 2-for-4 at the plate and Kayla Mobley doubled and scored for Greene County on offense. Bailey Godwin added a single and a run and Emily Christensen singled and drove in a run for the Rams.

COLLINS – A sixth inning burst on offense was enough to get Collins-Maxwell-Baxter a 9-5 Heart of Iowa Conference victory over North Polk June 24 in Collins.

The Raiders broke a 5-5 tie with four runs in the sixth inning and pitcher Heather Jessen shut out North Polk in the top of the seventh to secure CMB’s fifth-consecutive victory.

CMB’s sixth-inning surge was its second four-run inning of the game. The Raiders also crossed the plate four times in the second and added another run in the fourth.

North Polk did all of its damage early. The Comets scored three times in the second and twice in the third to take a 5-4 lead.

Abbie Haupert was 2-for-4 with a run and three RBI and Megan Ritter went 2-for-3 with a double, two runs and two RBI to lead CMB’s seven-hit attack on offense. Mackenzie Schmitz went 1-for-4 with one, run, steal and RBI apiece; Payge Jurgens was 1-for-4 with a run and an RBI; Mikayla Eslinger went 1-for-2 with a walk, steal, run and RBI and Katie Camp, Emily Coughenour and Jordynn Wesseling each scored once for the Raiders.

Jessen gave up three earned runs on seven hits with three strikeouts and walks apiece in seven innings to earn the victory.

Stevi Jackson took the loss for North Polk. She allowed six earned runs on seven hits and also had three strikeouts and walks apiece in six innings.

Mikayla Burt went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI to lead North Polk at the plate. Bekah Ward was 2-for-3 with a double and a run; Audrey Ley doubled, scored and drove in a run and Alyssa Nichols singled and knocked in two runs for the Comets.
