MAXWELL – The 100th-career victory for Collins-Maxwell-Baxter football coach Rob Luther came in style Friday as the Raiders clobbered Clarke, 58-7, on senior night in Maxwell.
CMB didn’t allow itself to play down to the level of its overmatched opponent.
The Raiders ran for over 200 yards, picked up over 160 more through the air and they were turnover free on offense. On defense, CMB held Clarke under 100 yards rushing and forced four turnovers.
“We played focused and turnover-free,” Luther said. “We did not get sloppy and I felt we were sharp throughout the whole night. We also had a lot of different players score points and that was nice to see. It was a great way to send the seniors out and a nice way for me to get my 100th win.”
CMB led 37-0 at the half. Zach Samson threw three touchdown passes and ran for another, Gabe Schabillion had an 11-yard touchdown run and Joey Nissen kicked a 42-yard field goal for the Raiders during the opening two quarters.
The third quarter saw CMB put two more unanswered touchdowns on the board. Schabillion picked up his second rushing touchdown and Nate Bishop came off the bench to run one in from two yards out.
Clarke scored its only touchdown early in the fourth quarter on a 4-yard Gordon Witt run. Freshman Blake Coughenour came back with a 19-yard scoring scamper for his first varsity touchdown midway through the final period to cap the scoring for CMB.
The Raiders ended up with 372 total yards on offense. Samson had a big day, completing 10 of 14 passes for 155 yards and three touchdowns with no interceptions and he also ran for 42 yards and one score on eight carries.
Austin Moorman was the leading CMB receiver with five catches for 84 yards and one touchdown and he also ran for 28 yards on two carries. Bryce Kemp made three receptions for 60 yards and a touchdown, Brady Stover caught two balls for 11 yards and a score and Hunter Gunderson made one catch for 12 yards.
Schabillion was the leading Raider rusher with 81 yards on 17 carries. Bishop ran for 23 yards, Coughenour picked up 21 and Dalton Birchmier ran for 10 yards on two attempts.
Logan Cory made eight tackles and an interception he returned for 40 yards to lead CMB on defense. Moorman delivered an interception and a fumble recovery, Jordan Coughenour recovered a fumble and finished with six stops, Nick Littell picked up six tackles, Stover and Austin O’Connor tallied five apiece and Samson came through with a sack.
The victory put CMB at 4-4 overall and 2-3 in Class 2A District 6. The Raiders have their biggest game of the season this Friday when they travel to Bloomfield to take on Davis County (4-4, 3-2).
The winner will earn the final playoff-qualifying spot in the district.
“We have a huge opportunity this week,” Luther said. “Lots on the line and our backs are definitely against the wall.”
Clarke fell to 1-8 and 0-5. Witt ran for 60 yards on 10 carries and added a 28-yard reception and Rich Wilkins completed 8 of 16 passes for 125 yards with two interceptions for the Indians.
