SH snaps Raiders’ six-game win streak

JEWELL – A poor start against South Hamilton ended up costing the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter boys’ basketball team its six-game win streak Friday in Jewell.

The Raiders fell behind by 11 points after one quarter and could never recover, suffering a 65-48 loss.

CMB shot just 31 percent from the field. The Raiders were also hurt by seven 3-pointers and a 12 of 13 showing from the foul line by South Hamilton.

Bryce Kemp was the only player to score in double figures for the Raiders, who dropped to 6-3 overall and 3-3 in the Heart of Iowa Conference. Kemp netted 19 points on 7 of 16 shooting and he also had eight rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

Joey Nissen and Tommy Galloway each scored six points and Zach Samson, Seth Balke and Patrick Girard chipped in four apiece for CMB. Samson also had nine rebounds, two assists and one steal; Balke finished with three assists and rebounds apiece and Girard pulled down three rebounds.

Trevor Ullestad scored a game-high 20 points for South Hamilton. Ross Enderson tacked on 13 points off the bench, Collin Hill chipped in 12 points and Zach Zoske contributed seven points and rebounds apiece for the Hawks.

BAXTER – An efficient offense and strong rebounding helped Collins-Maxwell-Baxter get past Grandview Park Baptist, 72-59, in a non-conference affair Jan. 2 at Baxter.

CMB held a 35-33 lead at the half and then gradually pulled away in the second half for its sixth-consecutive victory. The Raiders outscored the Defenders 19-12 in the third quarter and then used another strong offensive surge in the final eight minutes to seal the deal.

As a team CMB shot at a solid 46-percent clip from the field. The Raiders were also 6 of 15 from 3-point range, 18 of 22 from the line and they produced a 36-24 rebounding advantage.

Bryce Kemp and Zach Samson each recorded a double-double to lead a balanced CMB attack. Kemp had 19 points, 10 rebounds and one block and Samson finished with 10 points, 13 rebounds and four assists.

Tommy Galloway added 13 points and two assists and Austin Moorman finished with 11 points and four assists. Seth Balke chipped in nine points and five rebounds and Joey Nissen hit two 3-pointers and tallied eight points.

J.J. Waddle led all scorers with 24 points and he also contributed eight assists for Grandview Park Baptist. Bradley Fisher added 15 points and seven rebounds and Chayton Tonemah had 13 points, six rebounds and three steals for the Defenders.
