Shorthanded CMB gives gritty effort in district semifinal

ALLEMAN - The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter baseball team gave a valiant effort, but the short-handed Raiders fell just short against a good Des Moines Christian team in Class 2A district semifinal play July 15 at Alleman.

The Raiders suffered a 6-4 loss at the hands of the Lions. Despite having to play with just eight players, CMB went blow for blow with Des Moines Christian for 5 ½ innings, but the bottom of the sixth proved fatal for the Raiders.

CMB was forced to play a man short since a group of players were gone on a church trip and Spencer Gauch suffered an injury in the top of the third inning. That left the Raiders with just two outfielders and they also were forced to take an automatic out every time Gauch’s spot came up in the batting order.

Despite the huge obstacle, CMB trailed just 3-1 after five innings. Then the Raiders put two runs on the board in the top of the sixth to tie the score.

But a miraculous victory wasn’t in the cards. Des Moines Christian came back with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to regain control.

The Raiders kept fighting hard in the top of the seventh. CMB put one more run on the board to make Des Moines Christian sweat it out, but the Raiders couldn’t complete the comeback, finishing the season with an 8-14 record.

Brady Stover threw 4 ⅓ solid innings as the starting CMB pitcher. Stover gave up three earned runs on just one hit with seven strikeouts and six walks in 4 ⅓ innings.

Seth Balke took the loss in relief. He allowed three earned runs on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts in 1 ⅔ innings.

Zach Samson had a big final game for CMB on offense. Samson smacked a pair of doubles, scored once and drove in two runs.

The Raiders tallied six hits overall.

Hunter McWhirter was 1-for-2 with a double, walk and two runs. Creighton Caple and Tucker Maxwell were both 1-for-3 with an RBI, Spencer Gauch had one single, Jacob Stratton walked once and Aric Broderick scored one run.

Luke Neumayer picked up the win for Des Moines Christian. He allowed three earned runs with three strikeouts and one walk in 6 ⅔ innings.

Nick Friess tripled and drove in a run and Neumayer was 1-for-2 with two walks, three steals and one run and RBI apiece for the Lions on offense.
