ALLEMAN – A big first half made all the difference for the Ballard girls’ soccer team in a 5-2 victory over rival North Polk April 24 at Comet Field in Alleman.

Ballard took complete control of the game during the first 40 minutes. By halftime the Bombers held a 4-0 lead, thanks to goals from Emily Knittel, Steph Knittel, Abby McGee and Rachel Watters.

The second half was a lot more challenging.

North Polk regrouped to pull within 4-2 late in the half. Freshmen Hannah Becker and Alexandria Dvorak each found the back of the net once to pull the Comets within striking distance.

But Ballard regrouped to slam the door on North Polk. Emily Knittel iced the game with her second goal, and the Bomber defense took care of the rest.

Emily also had one assist to go along with her two goals. Sarah Hugee and Sydney Smith added one assist apiece for Ballard and North Polk ended up with one assist courtesy of Joy Smith.

Ballard keeper Maggie Raes ended up with four saves, helping the Bombers improve to 2-1 on the season.

North Polk dropped to 2-2 on the season. Madisson Weiss made four saves in one half and Jaci Sardou added another save in the other half for the Comets at keeper.
