Turnovers doom CMB in loss to B-F

Raiders put up 409 yards in 49-27 loss

BAXTER – Turnovers and big plays hurt the Collins-Maxwell-Baxter football team in a 49-27 loss to Bondurant-Farrar Friday in Baxter.

The Raiders coughed up the ball three times and didn’t force a single turnover in the Class 2A District 7 opener for both teams. They also gave up three touchdowns of 25 yards or more, falling to 1-2 on the season and 0-1 in the district.

“Bondurant-Farrar just made more plays when they needed to,” CMB head coach Rob Luther said. “We made a lot of mental mistakes. Too many penalties and turnovers and we could not get them off the field on fourth down.”

Bondurant-Farrar (2-1, 1-0) jumped out to a 19-6 lead at the half. Grant Petersen had two short touchdown runs in the first quarter for the Bluejays and Drake Fuller found Sam Duffy on a 25-yard scoring strike in the second quarter for Bondurant-Farrar.

Fuller threw touchdown passes of 56 yards to Jarrid Clark and 10 yards to Dillon Stafford in the third quarter to help Bondurant-Farrar build a 33-12 advantage. Fuller accounted for two more touchdowns in the fourth quarter – a 29-yard pass to Tucker Ksiazek and a 2-yard touchdown run.

Stafford added a 40-yard field goal to build a 49-20 advantage for Bondurant-Farrar with just two minutes, 37 seconds left in the final period to wrap up the victory for the Bluejays.

Despite the final margin, CMB had its chances during the game. The Raiders actually outgained the Bluejays in total yards – 409 to 387.

“We still had 400 yards of offense,” Luther said. “We’re just struggling to put four quarters together right now.”

Quarterback Zach Samson threw three interceptions, but he also had three touchdown passes and one score on the ground. Samson accounted for 293 total yards as he completed 12 of 22 passes for 217 yards and ran the ball 16 times for 76 yards.

Bryce Kemp had a monster game at receiver. He caught five passes for 157 yards and hauled in all three of Samson’s touchdown tosses.

Kemp made a 23-yard touchdown reception in the second quarter and a 62-yard scoring grab early in the third period that pulled CMB within 19-12. Kemp also scored the final touchdown of the game on a 58-yard grab with 1:46 left in the fourth quarter.

“Kemp made some big plays to keep us in the game,” Luther said.

Zach Huffaker ran for 122 yards on 12 carries and Austin Moorman made four receptions for 61 yards for CMB on offense.

Defensively, Kemp and Clayton Weltha both made eight tackles and Austin O’Connor, Logan Cory and Nick Little tacked on seven apiece for the Raiders. Samson added six stops and Huffaker and Jordan Coughenour each had four.

Fuller completed 10 of 20 passes for 201 yards and four touchdowns with no interceptions, and he also ran for 73 yards to lead Bondurant-Farrar. Petersen rushed for 109 yards on 24 carries, Clark had the one big 56-yard touchdown grab, Ksiazek made two catches for 46 yards and Sam Duffy had three grabs for 50 yards for the Bluejays.

CMB has a tough task in its attempt to rebound from the Bondurant-Farrar loss this Friday. The Raiders will host Prairie City-Monroe (2-1) on homecoming night in Maxwell.

“It’s a big week for us,” Luther said. “Homecoming. PCM. District game. Backs are against the wall.”

The CMB-PCM affair will start at 7:30 p.m. in Maxwell.
