Two Comets land on all-HOIC first team in volleyball

North Polk had two players named to the all-Heart of Iowa Conference volleyball first team and Collins-Maxwell-Baxter had one player selected to the second team in 2013.

Outside hitters Megan Murphy and Lilly Lomica were named to the first team from North Polk after helping the Comets go 6-3 in the conference and 24-10 overall to match the school single-season win mark.

Murphy had 105 kills, 101 digs and 16 blocks and aces apiece in conference play during her senior year. Lomica – a junior – compiled 119 digs, 55 kills, 10 blocks and nine aces against HOIC competition.

The rest of the all-HOIC first team consisted of Nevada’s Megan Pringnitz, Michaela Matuska and Kati Cassabaum, Roland-Story’s Anna and Lauren Himan, South Hamilton’s Hannah Pulis and Gilbert’s Alex Miner. Pringnitz and Matuska were unanimous picks after helping lead Nevada to an unbeaten conference championship.

Senior middle blocker Abbie Haupert was named to the all-HOIC second team for CMB. Haupert delivered 76 digs, 71 kills and 23 blocks in conference play for the Raiders.

North Polk’s Morgyn Bullock and Miranda Murphy and CMB’s Abbey Appelgate and Mackenzie Schmitz were named all-HOIC honorable mention.

Bullock recorded 117 digs and 15 aces and Murphy finished with 76 kills and 16 blocks in conference play. Appelgate tallied 101 digs, 17 aces and 16 kills and Schmitz ended up with 124 assists and 68 digs.
