Two Raiders place in top five at Bondurant

BONDURANT – The Collins-Maxwell-Baxter wrestling team produced a pair of top-five individual finishes at the Bluejay Invitational Saturday in Bondurant.

The Raiders’ Dawson Dahlke and Jake Hennick took second and fifth respectively at 285 and 113 pounds for CMB. As a team, the Raiders were last out of 11 teams with 98 points, just one point behind Iowa City High’s 10th-place score.

After receiving a pair of byes, Dahlke split two matches on the mat.

In the semifinals Dahlke pinned Waukee’s Bryce Dunham in one minute, 43 seconds. Dahlke then lost by fall to Boone’s Kyle Springis in the championship match.

Hennick also opened with a bye, and then he ended up going 2-2 in the tournament.

Hennick pinned Waukee’s Noah Gratias in 1:57, then lost by decision to Bondurant-Farrar’s Brandon Behle and by a 12-4 major decision against Iowa City’s Daniel Kelly. That put Hennick in the fifth-place match and he went on to score another pin over Gratias, this time sticking him in 1:08.

Shane White (170 pounds) and Logan Cory (182) each picked up two victories on the mat, and Beau Iske (126), Even Bianchi (138) and Archer McFadden (220) claimed one victory apiece for CMB. Cory and Bianchi both placed sixth, Iske and McFadden each took seventh and White came in eighth in their respective classes.

Waukee won the team championship at Bondurant with 260.5 points. Ames and Prairie City-Monroe were second and third with respective scores of 238 and 235.5.

NEVADA – Collins-Maxwell-Baxter couldn’t keep pace with Nevada in its opening dual of the season Dec. 5.

The Raiders managed just two victories on the mat in a 48-24 loss to their Heart of Iowa Conference rivals.

Jordan Coughenour and Bailey Holgate were the two CMB wrestlers to earn a victory. Both won by fall as Coughenour pinned Nevada’s Lucas Schneider in two minutes, 28 seconds at 160 pounds and Holgate stuck the Cubs’ Evan Webb in 3:08 at 132.

Archer McFadden (220 pounds) and Dawson Dahlke (285) each received a forfeit to account for CMB’s other points in the dual.

CMB’s Jake Hennick – the team’s top returning wrestler – came up short in a competitive dual with one of Nevada’s top veterans at 113, suffering a 5-2 loss to the Cubs’ Evan Rix.

Frank Mittlestadt was also in a competitive match as he lost, 5-1, to Nevada’s Traye Pelzer at 145 in the final match of the meet.

Nevada’s other victories were the result of four pins and three forfeits.
